· Petition: Paint The U.S. Capitol Building Like The Gay Pride Flag For Marriage Equality

Repaint the US Capitol Building to Match the Gay Pride Flag

Since not every congressional representative has a gay son to personally remind him/her that marriage equality is a basic human right it is deemed necessary to paint the U.S. Capitol Building the colors of the gay pride flag. For those who find it easy to ignore the LGBT community’s quest for the same basic rights has heterosexuals, this blast of color would provide a clear reminder of the injustice millions experience in this country. To save costs, the interior of the Capitol dome could remain the same, but the Capitol’s exterior, the offices of all legislators, and the carpets of both the House and Senate floors will be converted to match the gay pride flag. Only when marriage equality is the law of the land in all 50 states may the Capitol be returned to its original color.

You may have heard about the person who painted the house directly across from Westboro Baptist Church in rainbow colors to promote the message of equality. But that’s just one church in one state. What about the entire country?asked the staff at real estate search engine Estately. That led them to create a petition for the White House asking that the Capitol Building’s exterior, the offices of the legislators, and the carpets of the House and Senate floors be repainted in rainbow flag style to ‘provide a clear reminder’ of the movement. The petition needs 100,000 signatures by April 20th, so it will still be around after next week’s two different hearings on the gay marriage debate by the Supreme Court. Click through for the full text from the petition.

These are the peeps who got to march last, Southeast Asians, Latinos, Indians, and a black Baptist church.  Politicians like city council chair pro temp (DC city council chair Kwame Brown was just indicted this week) Mary Cheh and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton were at the front, naked, and mainly white, boys (in body paint) in the middle.

So politically connected up front, ethnic minorities in the back of the bus.

Hmmmmmmm.

The Pride committee also had a big show of trying to get vendors at the festival on Sunday to be “green.”  But the parade features people on floats throwing condoms, female condoms, minature frisbees, mardi gras beads, buttons, cards, candy, and flyers, at the people on the sidewalk.  Much of this stuff was still on the street the next morning.

It’s a hard job to organize this and they try.  But their ideological blinders and delusions are obvious.  These are the same people who are overjoyed that Obama said he personally is finally OK with gay marriage, if it will get him gay money, but only after North Carolina had its constitutional amendment pass.

Amazingly Saturday Night Live‘s Lorne Michaels is involved in a show that spoofs liberal hypocrisy and excess, Portlandia, on the Independent Film Channel (rebroadcast of 2012 episodes at 9 am this morning).

The show spoofs crunchy, granola Leftovers in the Pacific Northwest who do things like interrogate wait staff about the living conditions of the farm fowl being served on the menu.

This morning’s episode features a spoof of gay pride parades, Allergy Pride.  Well done and funny.

‘Portlandia’ season 2: ‘One Moore Episode’ recap

Published: Friday, January 13, 2012

portlandia-season2.jpgView full sizeRaise a glass to a strong episode of “Portlandia” season 2, Carrie Brownstein and guest star Eddie Vedder.

It’s obvious why IFC decided to make “One Moore Episode,” the second in“Portlandia” season 2, available for viewing online even before it aired Friday night.

It’s one of the show’s strongest outings yet, and highlights various examples of creative evolution over season 1.

For starters, there’s more cross-cutting within segments (as in the Carrie Brownstein-Eddie Vedder bit), which helps vary the pace; the satirical focus has expanded beyond alternative-culture to include middle-aged yuppie archetypes (three words: men in cardigans); and good heavens, there are some African-American people! Talk about a welcome addition to the rather pale world of “Portlandia.”

Oh, and the episode also made a viral direct hit on geekland, with a running bit about obsessively watching “Battlestar Galactica.” No wonder you couldn’t turn around last week without hearing/reading something online about “Portlandia” season 2.

It also doesn’t hurt that “One Moore Episode” gets off to a great start with the “Allergy Pride Parade,” probably the best sketch since season 1’s “Dream of the ’90s” music video. This shows what “Portlandia” does when it’s clicking: start with a clever idea, based on a social perception that rings true with anybody who’s been paying attention to this American life (to steal a phrase); exaggerate the idea for comic effect, but play it straight and understated; and round it off with a further development of the initial idea.

Carrie and Fred Armisen are wigged and costumed as uber-bland local TV news types. though they seem locked in a ’70s fashion time warp, their cheerfully inane commentary on the parade is as timely as last Thanksgiving’s Macy’s parade on NBC. A nice touch: the bleachers flanking their parade broadcast stand are sparsely populated with onlookers who seem just as depressed as the lactose/soy-intolerant parade participants. Actual Portland reference points for the “Pok PokPlayers,” demonstrating how Thai food can be fatal to peanut and shellfish-allergy sufferers. I like how the piece raises the stakes, leading up to the parade’s princess, who’s transported in an ambulance because she’s allergic to air, water and sun. And it ends just when it should, with the further heightening of Brownstein’s newscaster character succumbing to her dextrose allergy and joining the parade. In a Hearse.

After the credits — always a lovely interlude, conveying that “dreamy” quality IFC is always citing when describing the show — we’re at “N. Holland St.,” at a typical North Portland bungalow. Inside, “Doug” and “Claire” are preparing for an evening out, attending a birthday dinner at the Screen Door. (Quite a drive from North Portland.) But Doug would rather watch a DVD of season 1 of “Battlestar Galactica.” Claire reluctantly says, oh, OK, one episode. Instantly, they’re hooked, and as the days pass, they burrow in like junkies on a binge, not leaving the couch, collecting the yucky debris of takeout food around them, until Claire loses her job, and the power company is threatening to turn out the lights.

This is, obviously, another hugely resonant concept, as anyone who’s spent a glued-to-the-tube weekend devouring shows like “The Wire” can testify. They escalate it again, with Doug and Claire — desolate that there are no more “BSG” episodes to watch — looking in the phone book to try and find “BSG” scribe Ronald D. Moore. What do you know, he lives in Portland! This is a sign, apparently, of just how far gone they are.

But before we pick up the “BSG” thread, Carrie and Fred are a couple visiting a store specializing in artisan knots. Fred’s sporting a curly wig, moustache and yes, the dreaded bulky man’s cardigan. Could you call this a Mandigan? Anyway, this couple, who look and act as if they live in a close-in Northeast or Southeast Portland neighborhood (Irvington, possibly?) are on the hunt for a suitable housewarming gift, and they read about artisan knots in the Sunday Times. Yes, I’m thinking Irvington.

Jeff Goldblum, in a hilariously random pink blazer, waits on them with a combination of solicitude and creepiness — the purr-grrr as he brings out the tangled Apple earbud under glass is amusing and unnerving in equal parts. Also nice: the cap on the sketch, when the hostess brings her artisan knot gift to the basement to join a tableful of other artisan knots.

Now we’re at a house on S.E. 63rd Avenue. What? You mean “Portlandia” extends past Cesar Chavez Boulevard? Amazing. It’s the middle-aged helicopter parents from last week (the ones hovering over son Alex Gavlick). He’s got graying hair, and wears a cardigan and pleated khakis; she’s got graying hair and is trying to dress up comfortable wear with a little detail on her loose, blousy top. He’s assembling a fire pit in the backyard, and both indulge in fantasies of Burning Man-style bacchanalia as they gaze serenely on the do-it-yourself home project. Once it’s done and lit and a spark lands on him, she fire-extinguishes their little backyard flame, and that’s that.

Back to “Battlestar”: Doug and Claire arrive at a house on Northeast Alberta Street, where an African American lady is trimming a shrub. They ask her if Ronald D. Moore lives here. She skeptically says yes, then calls for her husband, Ron. He appears, a silver-haired African American gent. Doug and Claire ask if he’ll write another episode of “BSG.” Moore gives it serious thought, and then says, “I think we can do something with that.”

It’s a very “Portlandia” absurd touch that this Ronald D. Moore doesn’t say, “Are you crazy?” but goes along with the improbability of it all. He sets to work with Doug and Claire getting up to speed on “BSG,” even though his wife keeps telling him to get those two interlopers out of her house. Not everybody is in the “Portlandia” spirit of absurdity, apparently.

Now we’re at Oblique Coffee, in Southeast Portland. Carrie’s telling Fred about this guy she met who she was interested in — until she saw that he has a tattoo of Eddie Vedder. Holding a tambourine. We cut back and forth between Carrie and Scott (Scott Green, who also takes episode photos of “Portlandia”) together in the park, and Fred and Carrie in the coffee house. We see Carrie and Scott in bed together, and the Eddie Vedder tattoo starts talking to her. She just can’t get past this bad tattoo, she tells Fred. He points out that Eddie Vedder is a cool, talented guy so why not date him? Cut to Carrie and Eddie Vedder, enjoying a picnic on the grass at Washington Park (that’s what it looks like, anyway).  They’re hitting it off until Eddie reveals his own bad tattoo — Ani DiFranco, playing guitar with a nose ring. Cut to Carrie making a ‘What are ya gonna do?” face, as the Looney Tunes circle isolates her face, and it says “That’s All Folks.” Ani DiFranco may not be happy with this, but she seems an on-the-nose choice.

Back to “BSG”: A group is assembled for the first table read of Ronald’s episode. Seated around the table at his house are Doug, Claire, James Callis and Edward James Olmos, of the actual “BSG,” a bearded guy who says he’s a local actor currently appearing as the Mad Hatter (this is the real Ronald D. Moore, just for mind-bending purposes). Callis is willing to give it his all, but Olmos points out that the Ronald D. Moore in whose house they’re sitting isn’t the “BSG” guy.

Finally, Olmos is ready to bolt, Ronald D.’s wife arrives, once more wanting to know what these people are doing in her house, but Callis has an idea for something they can all watch together. “Are you familiar with ‘Doctor Who’?” It’s the perfect geek reference, and next we see everyone — Mrs. Moore included — gathered on the couch, obsessively watching. Though Olmos has dozed off.

Overall, a strong episode, though the “BSG” sketch could probably have been trimmed a tad. But I say that not being a “BSG” obsessive, so others are likely to disagree.

What did you think of “One Moore Episode”? Share thoughts and comments below, if you would be so kind.
